Xewkija Tigers suffered an unexpected defeat by Kirkop United in a match where the hosts failed to capitalise from their chances while the visitors managed to score a goal that decided the encounter that arrived twenty minutes from the end of the match. Kirkop managed to neutralise Xewkija’s play despite that the hosts were hot favourites to obtain the qualification to the next round and operated enough danger to earn a place in the next round of the competition.

Play between the two sides was balanced from the very beginning of the encounter and as time passed by Xewkija became also frustrated as they could not manage to take supremacy on the pitch.  Kirkop had an early attempt through Klikic that ended just high and Xewkija replied on 23 minutes through a shot from close distance by Chris Camilleri that ended high.  On 35 minutes Xewkija produced a good action where John Camilleri headed a cross by Kenneth Mercieca to an unmarked Chris Camilleri but the latter had his shot on the run that ended high.  Until the end of the first half each side created a scoring opportunity.  On 38 minutes Kirkop‘s goalie Joshua Galea turned to a corner with difficulty a strike by Chris Camilleri and seconds from the break Xewkija’s keeper Adrian Parnis was called to make a good intervention to neutralise a free kick by Andre Cutajar.

After the break Xewkija continued to struggle in their attempt to take command of play and could have opened the score on 63 when a free kick by Chris Camilleri arrived to Kenneth Mercieca but the latter headed high from an ideal position.  Kirkop scored the goal that decided the issue on 71 minutes when substitute Matthew Caruana released Vladimir Klikic in the area following an action from a free kick and the latter netted with a low shot that surprised the goalkeeper.  Xewkija were close to level the score on 80 minutes when Kirkop’s rearguard failed to clear a free kick by Chris Camilleri but John Camilleri’s attempt from close distance ended high.  Two minutes later Kirkop ended with a player less on the field when Dylan Rapinett was sent off for a second bookable offence.  Xewkija increased their pressure during the final stages in an attempt to force extra time but the closest they went to scoring was through two free kicks on 85 minutes and in the third minute of stoppage time by Chris Camilleri that ended both away from goal.
