Oratory Youths and Luqa St Andrews produced the best match from the first round of the FA Trophy at the Gozo Stadium where the qualification remained uncertain until the final whistle.  Both Oratory and Luqa seemed determined to obtain the victory and as a result the two sides were quite offensive and produced a good number of scoring opportunities besides the seven goals shared between them which at the end determined the final score.

Luqa tried to surprise their opponents form the very beginning and after few seconds of play a header by Charles Camilleri ended over Oratory’s goal.  The Youths replied on 8 minutes through a personal action by Shaun Attard who entered the area after exchanging the ball with Mark Camilleri but goalie Paul Psaila blocked the danger.  On 20 minutes the referee awarded a penalty when Justin Cilia floored Christian Cardona in the area.  Shaun Attard had his shot from the spot kick partially saved by goalie Paul Psaila but the same striker took the rebound and placed in goal.  Luqa had an immediate reaction and three minutes later they were also awarded a penalty for a foul by Keith Borg on Craig Marney. The latter took the penalty and levelled the score with his shot from the spot kick.  Play continued to be balanced and on 29 minutes the hosts regained the lead when Melchior Psaila’s back pass towards his goalkeeper was weak.  Mark Camilleri took the ball and netted with a low drive.  The Youths were again dangerous on 32 minutes through a lob by Andrea Debrincat that was neutralised by goalie Psaila.  The Youths failed to capitalise from a good moment and on two separate occasions the strikers failed to conclude in goal following an inviting low cross by Jurgen Attard and in the other occasion when Mark Camilleri released Shaun Attard in the area with a fine back heel.

Luqa came out more aggressive for the second period and on 58 minutes they scored the second equaliser through a header by Craig Marney following a cross by Diansand Brincat.  One minute after the hour mark Oratory’s substitute Kersten Grima concluded over the crossbar after receiving from Shaun Attard following a corner action and in the following action Andrea Debrincat also lifted over Luqa’s goal following a cross by Shaun Attard.  The Youths were punished for the missed chances as Luqa took the lead for the first time in the match on 69 minutes when a shot by Clive Psaila directly from a free kick took a deflection and ended in goal.  On 75 minutes Oratory were unlucky when an effort by Darko Stojanovic from a free kick by substitute Kevin Farrugia hit the post.  Four minutes later Oratory’s Kersten Grima entered Luqa’s area with a solo action but his low drive with the goalkeeper out of his position ended wide.  The Youths managed to level the score with a goal that arrived on 87 minutes through a shot from an angled position by James Tabone after receiving the ball in the area from Shaun Attard.

The match continued to be interesting during extra time.  The Youths had the best scoring opportunities during the first fifteen minutes of play.  On 98 minutes Shaun Attard released Andrea Debrincat in the area but the latter had his attempt deflected on the post to a corner by goalie Psaila and from the same corner action an overhead kick by Mark Camilleri ended wide.
