Mtarfa FC took advantage of the lack of experience of the GFA second division side Ghajnsielem and registered a comfortable 2-0 win to earn a place in the next round of the competition.  The match was well contested during the first hour of play but as soon as Mtarfa opened the score the Blacks lost confidence and their reaction arrived at a late stage of the encounter.  Moreover, Ghajnsielem were often erratic in their final pass and also committed some mistakes at their defence which compromised their possibility to move to the second round of the competition for the first time from the four editions of the competition contested so far.

Play during the first period was rather balanced.  Ghajnsielem could have opened the score in the third minute of play but Kenny Hili concluded weak following a cross by Joseph Attard and goalie James Borg saved in two attempts.  Three minutes later a strike by the same Attard ended high and on 28 minutes Mtarfa replied through an attempt by Omar Myao Mwema that was cleared off the fatal line by Charlon Grima.  Ten minutes from half time Ghajnsielem were again dangerous through a free kick by Jason Portelli that ended high.

The two sides were adventurous after the break.  On 55 minutes an attempt by Arvin Micallef ended just away of Ghajnsielem’s goal and on the hour mark Ghajnsielem’s Charlon Tabone had a strike from outside the area that missed the target.  Two minutes later Ghajnsielem’s goalie Luke Buttigieg was called to make a difficult intervention to turn to a corner a good shot by Cliven Mizzi and from the resultant corner action the ball arrived to an unmarked Paul Azzopardi who headed in goal from close distance.  On 64 minutes Mtarfa could have doubled the score when Cliven Mizzi entered Ghajnsielem’s area but his attempt with the goalkeeper out of hois position ended on the side of the net.  The host replied on 72 minute through a fine move by Joseph Attard but Charlon Tabone ended up concluding weak from close distance and goalie James Borg saved the danger.  One minute later the same goalkeeper denied Ghanjnsielem from levelling the score when he turned to a corner with difficulty a strike by Robert Grima who was released in the area by Jason Portelli and from the resultant corner action goalie Borg neutralised a close ranged header by Charlon Grima.  On 75 minutes Mtarfa threatened again Ghajnsielem’s rearguard but an attempt by substitute Luca Borg was saved to a corner by goalie Buttigieg.  Ghajsnielem tried to increase their efforts during the final stages of the match and on 83 minutes a strike by Charlon Tabone ended away from goal.  One minute later Jason Portelli unmarked Damon Hili in Mtarfa’s area but the latter had his attempt blocked by goalie Borg.  Mtarfa sealed the victory with the second goal that arrived on 87 minutes as Cliven Mizzi entered Ghajsnielem’s territory in a counter break asnd from his low pass substitute Keitrich Sant was at the right place to push the ball across the line with a tap-in.
