The second semi-final of the BOV GFA Cup for this season respected the expectations as Xewkija Tigers obtained an easy win over Ghajnsielem.  The match was dominated by the first division champions and paved the way to the large win with four goals scored during the opening twenty minutes.  Ghajnsielem managed to recover two goals as Xewkija reduced their pressure but the Tigers regain full command of play near the end of the first half and scored two more goals before the break.  The match lost much of the importance during the second period.  Xewkija scored two other goals while Ghajnsielem could have scored a third goal but they had an opportunity form a penalty that was missed.  Xewkija’s Eric Nwankwo scored a hat-trick, Daniel Bogdanovic and Dene Shields scored a brace each while Kenneth Mercieca scored the other goal.  With this result champions Xewkija are now looking forward to prolong their celebrations with two more honours as they are favourites to win the finals of the GFA Cup and the Super Cup against Oratory Youths.

As expected Xewkija took command of play from the early stages and opened the score in the eighth minute from a penalty, awarded for a foul by Frank Lee Galea on Daniel Bogdanovic.  The latter converted from the spot kick.  On 16 minutes a low shot by Xewkija’s John Camilleri following a personal action ended wide and one minute later Xewkia doubled the score through a low shot from outside the area by Dene Shields that surprised goalie Luke Buttigieg.  On 17 minutes Daniel Bogdanovic added another goal with a fine shot from the edge of the area following a solo action and two minutes later Kenneth Mercieca headed in goal a corner kick by Daniel Bogdanovic to make the score 4-0.  Xewkija reduced their pressure on Ghajnsielem’s rearguard and play started to take place more in the midfield.  The Blacks also operated some good breaks and managed to score two goals.  On 31 minutes Ghajnsielem took advantage of a melee in front of goal following a corner kick by Jason Portelli and Michael Bezzina placed in goal from close distance.  Four minutes later Ghajnsielem’s Robert Grima had a cross from the right that was handled in the area by Kenneth Mercieca.  The referee awarded a penalty and Jason Portelli netted with his shot from the spot kick.  Xewkija regained territorial supremacy and re-established their four-goal lead before half time.  On 43 minutes a shot by Christian Bugeja was turned to a corner by goalie Luke Buttigieg and from the corner kick by Daniel Bogdanovic, Eric Nwakwo headed in goal.  Seconds from half time Ghajnsielem’s goalie Luke Buttigieg partially saved a low cross by Dene Shields and Eric Nwankwo arrived from the far post and guided the ball in goal.

Ghanielem could have scored a third goal on 53 minutes when the referee awarded the third penalty of the encounter for a foul by goalie Lorjean Xuereb on Michael Bezzina but Jason Portelli’s shot from the spot kick was saved by Xewkija young goalkeeper.  Xewkija punished their opponents for the missed chance on 56 minutes when Dene Shields made it 7-2 for Xewkija directly from a free kick.  Ghajnsielem replied on 65 minutes through a shot by Frank Lee Galea that was blocked to a corner and in the following action Xewkija’s Daniel Bogdanovic passed to Eric Nwankwo who had a low shot that was cleared off the goal mouth by Charlon Grima.  Ghajnsielem were reduced to ten players on 72 minutes when Gharlon Grima was sent off for dissent noted by the assistant referee Chris Azzopardi.
