The match between Xaghra United and Munxar Falcons was a direct encounter between the two sides who were relegated from the top flight last season.  Thus, both teams were aiming for a positive start for the new season in an attempt to make up for the disappointing experience.  At the end in this match Xaghra seemed more organised and determined so that they earned the qualification and the possibility to challenge for the first honour of the category.  The coaches of the two sides, Xaghra’s Shaun Attard and Munxar’s Mario Bonello were both making their debut with the respective team together with a number of players.

Xaghra took territorial supremacy from the early stages and opened the score in the eight minute through a low drive by Sam Harland (ex-Gharb Rangers) following an inviting pass by Aleandro Bezzina (ex-Victoria Hotspurs).  Munxar failed to produce a reaction and on 14 minutes Munxar’s goalie Felix-John Cassar saved in two attempts a good shot by Joseph Buhagiar. Minutes later an effort by Luke Attard ended wide but on 33 minutes Xaghra doubled the score through Daniel Bartolo who concluded a personal action.  Xaghra could have added another goal one minute later but Joseph Bihagiar’s shot ended just wide.  Munxar had their best scoring opportunity of the first half in the third minute of stoppage time before the break through a corner kick by Frank-Paul Azzopardi (ex-Qala Saints) that hit the woodwork.

Munxar improved their performance during the second period and managed to create some good chances on Xaghra’s goal.  On 54 minutes Orlando Atzori (ex-Oratory Youths) could have concluded better but his lob was saved in two attempts by goalie Daniel Galea.  Xaghra resisted Munxar’s reaction and on 69 minutes they went close to score the third goal but Sam Harland’s shot following a personal action was saved by goalie Cassar.  However, Munxar kept insisting and on 82 minutes a direct corner kick by Roberto Sammut hit the post and from the following action a shot by substitute Keith Paul Camilleri was well saved by goalie Galea.  The same goalkeeper denied Munxar from scoring at least one goal on 87 minutes when he turned to a corner a good strike by substitute Mark Debrincat so that the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
