Sannat Lions and St Lawrence Spurs were coming from two defeats from their respective first two matches of the championship and were therefore determined to obtained their first points from a victory from a match that is considered as a clash from the red zone.  At the end the two sides were rewarded for their respective effort with a point each but throughout the match both Sannat and St Lawrence showed that they need to improve their accuracy in attack as the strikers at the two ends were very erratic in their finishing.  St Lawrence had Daniel Micallef and Louis Buttigieg back in their starting line-up after a one-match ban but they limited their possibilities to threaten Sannat’s rearguard by deploying William Barbosa in front of their defense instead of his usual position in attack.  For most of the ninety minutes Sannat created the better scoring opportunities but during the final stages of the encounter, where St Lawrence were playing with a player less on the field, the Spurs went closer to scoring and at the end Sannat’s goalie Angelo Brignoli saved the point for his side with two decisive interventions.

Play was rather balanced during the opening minutes of the match as the two sides were very cautious to protect their respective areas.  On 14 minutes Sannat’s Akande Williams had a good attempt from a corner action that was blocked by goalie Joseph grima and on 21 minutes Sannat operated a fast break through Ejofor Nkwocha but Fernando de Andrade had his attempt that was blocked on the line by Louis Buttigieg with the goal keeper beaten.  De Andrade had a good free kick on 31 minutes that was well saved by goalie Grima and on 41 minutes the same Brazilian striker concluded badly following a personal action.  Sannat lost another good scoring opportunity on 44 minutes when St Lawrence’s rearguard failed to clear the ball from their area but Eric Nwankwo’s shot from close distance was blocked by the defense.

Sannat were again dangerous in the seventh minute of play of the second period through a header by Eric Nwankwo from a free kick by Ejofor Nkwocha that ended high and one minute later St Lawrence had their first serious attempt at Sannat’s goal through a strike by Mambaye Boye following a personal action that ended wide.  On 56 minutes a Sannat’s Akande Williams incredibly shot over the crossbar with an open goal at his mercy following a melee in St Lawrence’s area from a free kick by Nkwocha and the Spurs replied on 61 minutes through a header by Mambaye Boye from a free kick by Barbosa that was well saved by goalie Brignoli.  Three minutes later St Lawrence’s goalie Grima was at the right place to save a shot by Nkwocha and one minute later a shot by Sannat’s skipper Mark Muscat ended high.  St Lawrence’s goalie Grima was again called in action on 66 minutes to save an effort by De Andrade.  On 80 minutes St Lawrence’s Shaun Mizzi almost opened the score but Sannat’s goalie Brignoli had excellent reaction and managed to block the danger with a difficult save.  One minute later Sannat’s Nkwocha had another attempt that was neutralized by goalie Grima and on 82 minutes the Spurs ended with ten players when player-coach Michael Vella was sent off for a second bookable offence.  Two minutes later Sannat almost took advantage of the extra player on the field but goalie Joseph Grima punched away a good shot by Nkwocha.  During the dying moments St Lawrence went closer to obtain the victory but on 89 minutes goalie Angelo Brignoli saved in two attempts a free kick by William Barbosa and in the third minute of stoppage time the same goalkeeper made the best save of the evening to turn to a corner a strike from long distance by Fabian Xuereb.
