In the match between the two sides at the two ends of the table, leaders Ghajnsielem managed to win the full points at stake for the fourth consecutive time by defeating Xaghra United with a goal scored during the first period.  Ghajnsielem’s win was deserved particularly because the Blacks created much more scoring opportunities than their opponents but they failed to convert their superiority in goals.  In this match Ghajsnielem’s rearguard had a very positive performance as they managed to resist Xaghra’s attempt to save the result.

Ghajnsielem produced pressure over Xaghra’s defense from the early stages of the encounter and were also dangerous through a free kick by Jason Portelli and an attempt by Charlon Tabone that was blocked by the opponents.  On 11 minutes Xaghra replied through a shot from outside the area by Daniel Portelli that was well saved by goalie Luke Buttigieg and six minutes later the same goalkeeper blocked the danger in time as Clayton Hili was entering alone in the area following a through pass by Victor John Saliba.  Ghajnsielem scored the goal that decided the encounter on 28 minutes when Charlon Tabone defended well a ball in the area and surprised the goalkeeper with a low drive.  Xaghra had their best phase of play during the last part of the first half where they have leveled the score on more than one occasion.  On 35 minutes Clayton Hili’s effort was well saved by goalie Luke Buttigieg and on 41 minutes Joseph Bartolo headed in the area a free kick by Joseph Xerri but Aleandro Bezzina’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper.  Goalie Buttigieg was again called to deny Xaghra from scoring in the second minute of stoppage time before half time following a close ranged attempt by Clayton Hili.

On 51 minutes Xaghra were again dangerous through a free kick by Joseph Xerri that was turned to a corner by goalie Buttigieg.  As time passed by Ghajnsielem regained command of play and two minutes after the hour mark Xaghra’s goalie Daniel Galea saved to a corner a cross-shot by Charlon Tabone and in another occasion on 71 minutes the same striker had his attempt stopped again the goalkeeper.  Five minutes later Ghajnsielem’s Robert Grima headed over the crossbar from a good position a free kick by Jason Portelli and Ghajnsielem’s last opportunity to double the score arrived on 79 minutes but Matthew Portelli headed wide an inviting cross by Jason Portelli
