Zebbug Rovers registered their second consecutive win in the campaign in their match against Qala Saints so that they recovered from their disappointing start in the first matches of the campaign.  This was also Zebbug’s second win over Qala Saints.  The former also registered a convincing win over the Maroons in the semi-final of the Knock Out competition for the second division at the beginning of the season.  In this match Qala seemed more competitive during the first part of the match but were demoralized as soon as Zebbug opened the score with a goal that arrived ten minutes from half time.

Play during the first part of the match took place mainly in the midfield as Qala struggled to take command of play while Zebbug defended well and actions at goal were very rare.  However, on 27 minutes Qala operated a counter break through Christoph Caruana but the young striker concluded badly as he came face to face with the goalkeeper.  Four minutes later Zebbug defense failed to clear the danger from the area with the goalkeeper out of his position but Shaun Muscat concluded wide from an ideal position.  On 34 minutes Zebbug’s goalie Baskal Saliba was well placed to turn to a corner a strike by Manuel Scerri.  The Maroons were punished for the missed chances and on one minute later the Rovers opened the score through a tap-in by Gorgi Portelli following a cross by Carlton Mifsud.  Zebbug gained confidence and doubled the score on 44 minutes when Manwel Cordina took advantage of some hesitation by Qala’s defense following a through pass by Errol Grima and lobbed easily into an open goal.

On 51 minutes Zebbug were again dangerous when substitute Franklin Cassar unmarked Manwel Cordina but the latter had his shot on the run stopped by the crossbar.  Qala’s reaction was sterile and the closest that they went to scoring was through a free kick by Manuel Buttigieg on 59 minutes that was also stopped by the crossbar and on 75 minutes an attempt by Manuel Scerri following a cross by substitute Francisco Mumford was blocked by the defense with the goalkeeper beaten.  Zebbug scored their third goal on 81 minutes when Manwel Cordina entered Qala’s territory in a counter break and from his cross Carlton Mifsud placed easily into an open goal.  One minute later a header by Qala’s Francisco Mumford was cleared off the line by Zebbug’s Michael Zerafa and in the first minute of stoppage time the Rovers sealed the victory with the fourth goal.  Manwel Cordina once again produced a fine move in a counter break and from his pass Gorgi Portelli came face to face with the goalkeeper and netted with a low shot.
