Ghajnsielem and Zebbug Rovers produced an interesting match where the two sides were aiming to end the first round with a victory.  As  a result each side prevailed over the other for a half each but while the Rovers failed to capitalize from their best chances, the Blacks were more effective and scored on four occasions.  With this result Ghajnsielem once again showed that they should not miss promotion at the end of the four rounds of the campaign.  The favourites for promotion do not only have a strong side which is mainly formed of a group made of mix between experienced and young players but they also have the determination to come out of difficult moments encountered during their matches.

In this particular match the Rovers surprised the more quoted opponents and dominated play for almost half of the first period.  On 6 minutes a header by Errol Grima following a corner by Michael Zerafa was deflected to another corner with the goalkeeper beaten.  From the same action the corner kick by Errol Grima hit the crossbar.  Ghajnsielem’s goalie Luke Buttigieg also had a busy evening and on 12 minutes he made a difficult intervention to turn to a corner a shot by Manwel Cordina.  Six minutes later another attempt by the same Cordina ended wide and Ghajnsielem replied on 35 minutes through a free kick by Jason Portelli that was turned to a corner with difficulty by goalie Baskal Saliba.  Ghajnsielem also managed to open the score four minutes later when Jason Portelli surprised the goalkeeper with a shot from long distance that ended in the lower corner of the goal.  On 43 minutes Zebbug’s goalie was again called to make a good save following another free kick by Jason Portelli.  Zebbug however managed to level the scorfe before half time as Manwel Cordina won a ball between two defenders at the edge of the area on 45 minutes and placed easily in goal with a low drive.

The turning point of the encounter was in the second minute of play of the second period when Ghajnsielem won a free kick just outside the area that was taken by Jason Portelli who placed in goal with a fine shot.  The Rovers were demoralized and never managed to recover the set back.  On 67 minute Ghajnsielem converted their territorial supremacy into another goal through a goal by Kenny Hili who concluded behind goalie Saliba a good personal action.  Four minutes later the Blacks scored their fourth goal when Joseph Attard released Kenny Hili in the area and the latter netted as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block th danger.  On 74 minutes Ghajnsielem’s Joseph Attard could have added another goal but his low shot addressed to the far post following a pass by Jason Portelli ended just wide and on 85 minutes substitute Darren Azzopardi’s header following a free kick by Jason Portelli ended just over Zebbug’s goal so that the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
