Gharb Rangers defeated Zebbug Rovers for the second time in the campaign following a determined reaction in the final stages of the encounter where they managed to score two goals to turn a defeat into a victory.  The match was well contested where both Gharb and Zebbug were aiming for the three points as they were on equal points before this encounter.  As a result victory could have gone either way but with this result the Rangers consolidated their third spot on the table.

Zebbug produced the first scoring opportunity of the match in the fourth minute of play through an attempt from an angled position by player-coach Sylvan Galea that was deflected in time by goalie Daniel Spiteri.  Minutes later Gharb’s Josef Portelli had an attempt that ended on the side of the net and on 28 minutes the same Portelli threatened Zebbug’s rearguard but his shot from outside the area ended just over the crossbar.  The Rangers increased their efforts during the last part of the first period and on 43 minutes Zebbug’s goalie Baskal Saliba was at the right place to save an attempt by Josef Muscat.  One minute later the same Muscat had a shot from a good position that ended just wide.
In the second minute of play of the second period Zebbig’s goalie Baskal Saliba was again called to make a difficult intervention and save in two attempts a strike by Josef Portelli.  In the same action Zebbug’s Christian Cassar recovered his position and cleared the danger from the goalmouth.  Zebbug opened the score on 51 minutes when Sylvan Galea followed a through pass by Philip Cardona and arrived on the ball before goalkeeper Daniel Spiteri so that he lobbed easily into an open goal.  On 54 minutes Gharb’s goalie blocked with difficulty a free kick by Manwel Cordina.  Zebbug could have doubled the score on 71 minutes but a good attempt by Sylvan Galea was cleared off the line to a corner by Matthew Grech.  Gharb recovered from the diffult patch and during the final stages they increased their efforts to save the result.  On 75 minutes a close ranged shot by Gharb’s player-coach Noel Borg was well saved by goalie Baskal Saliba and on 83 minutes the Rangers levelled the score through an overhead kick by substitute Stephen Apap following a cross by Noel Borg.  Gharb scored the goal that gave them the victory on 89 minutes when Christian Cassar floored Josef Muscat in Zebbug’s area and from the resultant penalty Frank Attard fired in goal.
