Ghajnsielem confirmed their god start to te new season and won the first honour for the category with a deserved win over Zebbug Rovers in the final match of the Knock Out competition.  Ghajnsielem dictated matter for long stretches and their strikers were a continuous threat to Zebbug’s rearguard.  The victory for the Blacks arrived through a goal scored in each half but in other occasions they had goals that were disallowed and also missed a penalty kick fifteen minutes from time.  On the other hand Zebbug struggled to remain in contention for the honour but they were very weak at their defense and their attack only produced some danger when they were already trailing by two goals.

The Blacks could have opened the score in the second minute of play but a close ranged shot by Charlon Tabone was blocked to a corner.  The Rovers replied through a free kick from long distance that was neutralized by goalie Luke Buttigieg and in the ninth minute Ghajnsielem opened the score.  Jason Portelli released Charlon Tabone in Zebbug’s area and the latter netted easily with a low drive.  The same Tabone had another attempt on 11 minutes that ended wide and three minutes later Zebbug’s central defender Alex Tramboo risked an own goal in an attempt to pass the ball to his goalkeeper but Jean paul Saliba recovered in time and cleared the danger to a corner.  On 25 minutes a goal by Charlon Tabone was disallowed for a foul by the same player and three minutes later another goal by the same Tabone following a free kick by Matthew Portelli was again disallowed for an offside.  On 31 minutes a shot by Kenny Hili after receiving from Jason Portelli ended high and five minutes later the Blacks had a third goal, netted by Damon Hili, that was disallowed for a foul by Charlon Tabone on the goalkeeper.  On 40 minutes a good strike by Matthew Portelli missed the target and two minutes later Damon Hili’s attempt was stopped by the crossbar.

After the resumption Ghajnsielem continued to produce pressure on their opponents and on 50 minutes a shot from an angled position by Charlon Tabone hit the two posts and from the rebound Kenny Hili placed in goal but the score was disallowed for an offside infringement by the same player.  Two minutes later an effort by Joseph Attard ended wide and on 53 minutes Ghajnsielem scored their second goal through Kenny Hili who concluded behind goalie Baskal Saliba following a solo action.  Zebbug could have reduced the deficit on 62 minutes when substitute Charlton Mifsud had a good shot that was stopped by the cross bar and in the following action the same player concluded wide when he was in a good position to hit the target. On 75 minutes Ghajnsielem were awarded a penalty for handling by Alex Tramboo following a cross by Kenny Hili but Matthew Portelli’s shot from the spot kick was saved by goalie Baskal Saliba.  In the first minute of stoppage time Zebbug could have scored a consolation goal but Charlton Mifsud’s attempt after receiving from Manwel Cordina was well blocked by goalie Luke Buttigieg.

After the final whistle the President of the Gozo Football Association Mr Alvin Grech together with the General secretary of the Association Mr Joe Bajada presented the trophy and medals to Ghajnsielem’s players, coaching staff and officials among the celebrations of the supporters.
