Xaghra United confirmed their good start in the second round of the GFA Division II campaign and registered their second consecutive win from their match against Qala Saints.  With this result the Blues moved to a mid-table position and left two other teams behind them in the struggle against the bottom place on the table.  Xaghra’s win matured with a determined performance during the second period.  Qala managed to open the score midway the first half and seemed in a position to administer play until the end of the first half.  However, Xaghra produced a good reaction during the second period and not only leveled the score but managed to earn the full points at stake by scoring two other goals.

Play during the first part of the encounter took place mainly in the midfield as the strikers did not manage to create danger to the goalkeepers.  Qala opened the score in their first serious attempt at goal when Alan Cini surprised goalie Daniel Galea with a fine touch after receiving from Manuel Buttigieg.  Xaghra’s reply arrived on 32 minutes through a shot by Joseph Xerri that ended wide and on 42 minutes Qala’s Christoph Caruana threatened Xaghra’s rearguard with a good shot that ended over the crossbar.

After the break Xaghra increased their efforts and on 49 minutes a shot on the run by Aleandro Bezzina was well saved to a corner by goalie Franco Buttigieg.  Five minutes later the Maroons replied through a free kick by Manuel Buttigieg that was neutralized by goalie Daniel Galea and on 65 minutes Qala’s goalie Buttigieg was again called to make a difficult intervention to deny substitute Daniel Bartolo from scoring.  Xaghra however scored the equalizer on 67 minutes when a good header by Daniel Bartolo was turned to a corner by goalie Buttigieg and from the same corner kick taken by Joseph Xerri, Joseph Buhagiar headed in goal.  Qala tried to become more adventurous but the Blues continued to express the better play.  Xaghra also turned the result in their favour on 82 minutes when Joseph Buhagiar released himself from to defender just outside the area and netted with a good shot.  In an immediate reply by the Saints a header by Josef Galea from a free kick by Christoph Caruana was deflected to a corner by the defense.  On 88 minutes Xaghra sealed the deserved win with a third goal that arrived through a lob by Luke Attard that was out of the reach of goalie Franco Buttigieg.
