Oratory Youths were favourites o win the three points from their match against St. Lawrence Spurs as they were aiming to defend their position on the table and to increase their lead over the fifth team on the table.  However, the match turned out into a balanced encounter where victory could have gone either way.  The Youths had a very good start and they could have easily opened a two-goal lead but they ended up suffering St. Lawrence’s reaction so that the relegation strugglers created enough scoring opportunities where they could have earned their second win in the championship.  The two protagonists of the encounter were undoubtedly Oratory’s Thiago Dos Santos and St. Lawrence’s Christopher Cauchi who scored a brace each.

In the first minute of play Oratory’s Shaun Attard had a good attempt that ended just wide while the Spurs tried to reply through shots by Lawrence Grima and Jonathan Micallef that did not create particular danger to Oratory’s goal.  The Youths opened the score on 15 minutes through a fine strike by Thiago Dos Santos who took the ball from a deflection following a move by Mark Camilleri.  Two minutes later the Spurs had a free kick by William Barbosa that was deflected by the wall to a corner and on 23 minutes Oratory lost a golden scoring opportunity when Thiago Dos Santos released Shaun Attard and the latter turned around his direct opponent in the area before shooting two consecutive attempts that were both blocked by goalie Joseph Grima.  At the end the ball arrived again to Shaun Attard but the striker concluded high from close distance. Oratory were punished for not increasing their lead as the Spurs grew in confidence and surprised their opponents with effective play.  On 26 minutes St. Lawrence leveled the score through a first timer by Christopher Cauchi following a pass by Lawrence Grima and one minute later the same striker had an attempt that was neutralized by goalie Elliot Fenech.  Christopher also had a goal disallowed by the referee on 29 minutes for a foul by debutant Cedric Sciberras on the goal keeper following a corner action.  On 34 minutes the Spurs turned the result in their favour when Jonathan Micallef took a ball from a long ranged free kick by Barbosa and from his low pass Christopher Cauchi was at the right place to turn the ball in goal from close distance. The Spurs continued to produce more danger and on 45 minutes Oratory’s goalie cleared in time before Mambaye Boye could conclude in goal following a through pass by Christopher Cauchi.

In the sixth minute of play of the second period St. Lawrence’s Cedric Sciberras had an attempt that ended wide and three minutes later Oratory leveled the score when Mark Camilleri entered the area with a personal action and from his pass Shaun Attard fired in goal with a first timer.  On 57 minutes Barbosa tried to release Cedric Sciberras in Oratory’s area but goalie Elliot Fenech cleared the danger in time.  Seconds later Mambaye Boye entered oratory’s area but his attempt hit the post.  On the hour mark Oratory’s Shaun Attard had an effort that ended on the side of the net and on 66 minutes Oratory’s goalie saved in two attempts a header by Cedric Sciberras following a cross by Jonathan Micallef.  The same goalkeeper was called to make another good intervention one minute later following another attempt by the same Sciberras and on 72 minutes Mambaye Boye incredibly headed wide from close distance following a cross by Lawrence Grima.  One minute later a shot on the run by Cedric Sciberras following a pass by Jonathan Micallef ended wide and on 81 minutes the Spurs were punished for the missed chances as Oratory took the lead for the second time in the encounter.
