First division side Sannat Lions found it more difficult than expected to obtain qualification to the next round of the competition from their match against Xaghra United. Sannat, who included a number a young players who are not usually deployed in the starting line-up, produced more scoring opportunities throughout the encounter but they had to wait to the final moments of the match to break the deadlock.  Xaghra confirmed the improvement expressed in their last league matches, while Sannat seemed determined to obtain a positive result and end a long period which left them without a win from the seven matches of the championship.

Sannat were more aggressive from the early stages of the encounter and in the 13th minute a header by Nicholas Micallef following a corner kick by Kenneth Bonnici ended just high.  On 22 Daniel Borg had a shot on the run that ended over Xaghra’s goal and two minutes later Xaghra’s goalie Frank Azzopardi saved an effort by Fernando de Andrade.  Xaghra first attempt at goal arrived on 32 minutes through a cross-shot by Steve Sultana that ended high and on the stroke of half time a header by Fernando de Andrade from a free kick by Akande Williams hit the crossbar.

In the first minute of play of the second period another header by Fernando de Andrade from a cross by Josiah Buttigieg was also stopped by the crossbar and on 51 minutes Xaghra’s keeper Frank Azzopardi neutralized a low shot by Kenneth Bonnici.  Sannat continued to create danger and two minutes after the hour mark a header by Fernando de Andrade from another cross by Josiah Buttigieg was deflected to a corner.  Xaghra’s best opportunity to opened the score arrived on 73 minutes through a low shot by Luke Attard that was cleared off the line by Josiah Buttigieg with the goalkeeper beaten.  Sannat opened the score on 83 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Steve Sultana on Sannat’s Luke Attard and Fernando de Andrade converted from the spot kick.  Xaghra were demoralized and on 89 minutes Sannat sealed the victory with a second goal through a low drive by Fernando de Andrade following a through pass by substitute Patrick Camilleri.
