Gharb Rangers defeated Munxar Falcons in a match between two sides who are the main challengers for the runners-up position of the Division II league.  In this match the Rangers surprised their opponents particularly during the first period where they held territorial supremacy and punished their opponents by scoring from three episodes where Munxar’s rearguard hesitated to clear the danger from their area.  Munxar tried to produce a reaction during the second period but they only threatened their opponents until they scored their only goal as Gharb regain control of play and administered their lead until the final whistle.

Gharb opened the score in the ninth minute of play when Frank Attard’s pass inside the area arrived to Josef Portelli who released himself of his direct opponent and netted with a low shot form close distance.  Gharb continued to dictate matters and on 16 minute a good shot by Stephen Apap was neutralized by goalie George Vella.  On 20 minutes Gharb doubled the score when Frank Attard took the ball following some hesitation by the defenders and concluded in goal with a low drive.  On 26 minutes Munxar replied through a strioke by Alex Sacco that was stopped by the crossbar and two minutes later Gharb increased their lead when a cross by Justin Azzopardi arrived to an unmarked Stephen Apap who turned around the goalkeeper and placed the ball into an open goal.  Munxar’s goalie George Vella denied Gharb from scoring the fourth goal on 37 minutes with a fine intervention following a shot by Christian Attard.

Gharb came out over confident for the second period and Munxar took advantage of the situation and started to operate more dangerous play.  On 57 minute they also reduced the deficit through a strike by substitute Stefan Farrugia that ended out of the reach of goalie Daniel Spiteri.  Gharb however regain composure and for the rest of the match they managed to keep their area clear form danger and also to operate some good breaks within Munxar’s territory.  However, the two goalkeepers were rarely called into action so that the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
