In the second match between two sides from the first division league of the first round of the GFA Cup, Xewkija Tigers defeated St. Lawrence Spurs and will now face Victoria Hotspurs in the quarter finals stage.  St. Lawrence Spurs resisted to Xewkija’s supremacy for most of the first half but compromised their chances to remain in contention by conceding a goal on the stroke of half time and two other goals during the initial stages of the second half.  St Lawrence tried to boost their strength in attack by deploying William Barbosa in an advanced position but they ended up losing composure in their deployment to protect their rearguard.  On the other hand Xewkija confirmed their potential in attack as they have more than one player who can conclude the play produced.  In this encounter Xewkija’s Daniel Bogdanovic, Dene Shields and Chris Camilleri scored two goals each, while John Camilleri was also a continuous threat to St. Lawrence’s rearguard.

In the eighth minute of play St. Lawrence’s William Barbosa had a good shot that was neutralized by goalie Adrian Parnis and on 13 minutes Xewkija opened the score through a fine shot by Daniel Bogdanovic from outside the area that ended out of the reach of goalie Joseph Grima.  Xewkija tried to increase their pressure on their opponents and on 18 minutes goalie Joseph Grima was again called to save a good shot by Chris Camilleri.  One minute later Xewkija’s defender Daniel Sakic almost surprised his goalkeeper and risked an own goal in an attempt to clear the danger.  The Spurs replied on 21 minutes through a shot by William Barbosa that ended wide and one minute later Xewkija had a goal by John Camilleri following a cross by Chris Camilleri that was disallowed for an offside.  On 28 minutes Xewkija’s Chris Camilleri and another attempt that ended wide and one minute after the half hour mark a free kick by Daniel Bogdanovic ended high.  On 33 minutes the same Bogdanovic had a header following a short clearance by St. Lawrence’s rearguard that ended wide and the Spurs replied on 36 minutes through a fee kick by William Barbosa was saved by goalie Adrian Parnis.  Two minutes later Xewkija’s Dene Shields had a header following a cross from the left that was saved by goalie Joseph Grima.  In an immediate reply by St. Lawrence Mambaye Boye’s header from a cross by Louis Buttigieg ended wide.  On 41 minutes a shot by Chris Camilleri after receiving from Kenneth Mercieca was again saved by goalie Grima and at the other end of the pitch an effort by Christopher Cauchi was deflected by Xewkija’s defense to a corner and minutes later John Camilleri had a strike that was saved by St. Lawrence’s goalkeeper.  Xewkija managed to double the score on 45 minutes when John Camilleri released Dene Shields who netted with a low shot.

The Spurs tried to produce a reaction after the break but they were surprised by Xewkija’s aggressive play.  The Tigers increased their lead on 50 minutes when Dene Shields turned in goal in style a cross from the right flank by Joseph Cefai.  On 56 minutes Xewkija scored their fourth goal through a fine strike from long distance by Chris Camilleri that surprised goalie Grima.  Xewkija seemed confident of qualification at this stage but on 58 minutes St. Lawrence were awarded a penalty for a foul by Joseph Mario Vella on William Barbosa and Mmbaye Boye converted from the spot kick.
