Gharb Rangers and Munxar Falcons produced a well contested encounter at the end of the ninth day of the campaign.  Munxar Falcons managed to defeat Gharb for the second time in the league so that with the points obtained they opened a gap of six points from the other three teams who are aiming to take the second place on the table of the lower category.  Munxar capitalized from their best chances and also took advantage of an extra player on the field during the last thirty minutes of the match so that they earned the three precious points from this direct clash.

The Falcons seemed more aggressive during the opening stages of the encounter but Gharb had the first serious attempt at goal when Stephen Apap defended a good ball inside Munxar’s area but his attempt from an angled position was stopped by the post.  Gharb gained confidence and became more dangerous in their play.  However, on the half hour mark Munxar could have opened the score when Orlando Atzori took the ball following a back pass at Gharb’s defense but Gharb’s goalkeeper recovered his position and blocked the danger.  Munxar however opened the score five minutes later through a low shot by Frank Paul Azzopardi following a pass by Orlando Atzori.  On 39 minutes Munxar went again close to scoring through a shot by Stefan Farrugia that ended wide and in the first minute of stoppage time before half time a free kick by Frank Paul Azzopardi ended just over Gharb’s goal.

Munxar continued to be in a better shape than their opponents after the resumption and on 55 minutes a shot by Alex Sacco ended wide.  Gharb became frustrated as time passed by and on the hour mark they were also reduced to ten players when Josef Portelli was sent off for a second bookable offence.  The Rangers tried to makle up for the mishap and on 64 minutes Munxar’s goalie George Vella was well placed to turn to a corner a strike by Christian Attard.  Six minutes later Munxar operated a good counter break through Orlando Atzori but from his inviting pass Frank Paul Azzopardi’s attempt was well saved by Gharb’s goalkeeper.  Munxar doubled the score on 75 minutes when Frank Paul Azzopardi entered Gharb’s area following a personal action but his shot was partially saved by goalie Daniel Spiteri.  From the rebound the ball arrived to an unmarked Stefan Farrugia who pushed the ball into an open goal.  Four minutes later Gharb managed to re-open the issue as Frank Attard reduced the deficit with a fine shot following a personal action and on 36 minutes the Rangers could have leveled the score but goalie George Vella made the best save of the afternoon to neutralize in two attempts a shot from outside the area by the same striker.  During the final stages of the encounter Munxar could have easily sealed the victory with at least another goal.  On 85 minutes substitute Mario Azzopardi had an attempt following a personal action that was blocked by Gharb’s goalkeeper and one minute later the same goalkeeper was again called to make a good intervention to save a shot by Stefan Farrugia.  Munxar’s striker Farrugia had another good scoring opportunity on 89 minutes but he concluded wide from a good position so that the score remained unchanged until the end of the encounter.
